- ➤ Southern Crescent Veteran Services is working to help 13 veterans and their families avoid eviction on August 29; disabled veteran Nia Turner and others have fallen behind on rent due to job loss and rising costs. The nonprofit is urging donations to cover overdue payments — rising housing costs have pushed these veterans to crisis. FOX 5 Atlanta
- ➤ Roswell will honor officer Jeremy Labonte with a roadway dedication after he was killed in February while responding to a suspicious call — a ceremony featuring state Sen. John Albers, Mayor Kurt Wilson and Chief of Police James Conrol will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Roswell Public Safety Headquarters. FOX 5 Atlanta
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Georgia DOT will suspend lane closures on interstates during Labor Day weekend from 12:00 p.m. Friday, August 29th to 5:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 2nd to ease congestion and improve safety; however, some closures may remain for emergencies. Drivers in metro Atlanta will plan ahead + use the 511GA app for real-time updates on traffic and road conditions. WSB-TV
- ➤ A federal report documented that most floors at Rice Street jail had only one detention officer for around 200 inmates—creating conditions where contraband and makeshift weapons were smuggled into the facility. County commissioners approved over $1 billion for improvements, and officials are now considering whether to build a new jail. WSB-TV
